New Beginnings: Mad God Woman’s Kitchen Adventures I
So a couple of posts back I noted that I was taking Son to the Dr for migraines. Did that, adjusted meds, etc. etc., still having troubles. Thinking something else was going on, I dutifully took him to his regular Dr. Now this is a new Dr – new geography, new provider. Had ever met her before. All I can say is, ‘House’ has a female doppleganger. Like a brusque Sherlock Holmes, she grilled first me and then Son. “What do you eat for breakfast in the mornings?” “Umm, Cocoa Puffs.” “And what do you eat for lunch?” “Umm, peanut butter sandwich, apple, chips, chocolate pudding and a granola bar.” “White bread or wheat?” “White.” “And what do you have for a snack after school?” “Umm, SpaghettiO’s, or Ramen.” “And dinner?” “Well, we don’t really eat dinner, like dinner where you sit down and all eat the same thing, we just kind of eat whatever, when we feel like it.” “So basically you eat nothing but starch and not a fruit or vegetable in sight.” Dr looks over at me and I see plain as day the thought balloon over her head: You expect me to do something about your kid’s stomach and headache troubles? Your family’s diet S-U-C-K-S!
We left Dr’s office somewhat chagrined, and discussed together the changes we would try to make. I dropped Son off at school, went home, and looked at what was in the cupboards. SpaghettiOs. Canned ravioli. Ramen noodles. Potato chips. And an empty Swiss Roll box. Goodness, did I actually buy all that? “Perhaps I could start by cutting out some of the processed foods – eat a little closer to the earth,” I said. And so, a bit at a time, I’m trying to do so.
It’s really not as hard as I thought it would be and it doesn’t take a trip to Whole Paycheck – erm, I mean Whole Foods; just need to buy less prepacked stuff and more ingredients and then figure out how to put them together. Like the dip I made tonight: Put some sour cream in a bowl. Add spices until it tastes right. Eat it. Not that hard, and just time-consuming enough to make me have to think about whether I really want it or not.
I did want it. It was delicious. I ate it with potato chips.
Baby steps, baby steps.
